Fertilizer 15N balance in a coffee cropping system: a case study in Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fenilli,Tatiele Anete Bergamo; Reichardt,Klaus; Favarin,José Laércio; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Silva,Adriana Lúcia; Timm,Luis Carlos.
Knowledge about the fate of fertilizer nitrogen in agricultural systems is essential for the improvement of management practices in order to maximize nitrogen (N) recovery by the crop and reduce N losses from the system to a minimum. This study involves fertilizer management practices using the 15N isotope label applied in a single rate to determine the fertilizer-N balance in a particular soil-coffee-atmosphere system and to deepen the understanding of N plant dynamics. Five replicates consisting of plots of about 120 plants each were randomly defined within a 0.2 ha coffee plantation planted in 2001, in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil. Nine plants of each plot were separated in sub-plots for the 15N balance studies and treated with N rates of 280 and 350 kg ha-1...

Genome-wide identification, classification and transcriptional analysis of nitrate and ammonium transporters in Coffea Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Tiago Benedito dos; Lima,Joni Esrom; Felicio,Mariane Silva; Soares,João Danillo Moura; Domingues,Douglas Silva.
Abstract Nitrogen (N) is quantitatively the main nutrient required by coffee plants, with acquisition mainly by the roots and mostly exported to coffee beans. Nitrate (NO3–) and ammonium (NH4+) are the most important inorganic sources for N uptake. Several N transporters encoded by different gene families mediate the uptake of these compounds. They have an important role in source preference for N uptake in the root system. In this study, we performed a genome-wide analysis, including in silico expression and phylogenetic analyses of AMT1, AMT2, NRT1/PTR, and NRT2 transporters in the recently sequenced Coffea canephora genome. We analyzed the expression of six selected transporters in Coffea arabica roots submitted to N deficiency. N source preference was...

Heterotrophic Bacteria Show Weak Competition for Nitrogen in Mediterranean Coastal Waters (Thau Lagoon) in Autumn ArchiMer
Trottet, Aurore; Leboulanger, Christophe; Vidussi, Francesca; Pete, Romain; Bouvy, Marc; Fouilland, Eric.
The importance of heterotrophic bacteria relative to phytoplankton in the uptake of ammonium and nitrate was studied in Mediterranean coastal waters (Thau Lagoon) during autumn, when the Mediterranean Sea received the greatest allochthonous nutrient loads. Specific inhibitors and size-fractionation methods were used in combination with isotopic N-15 tracers. NO3 (-) and NH4 (+) uptake was dominated by phytoplankton (60 % on average) during the study period, which included a flood event. Despite lower biomass specific NH4 (+) and NO3 uptake rates, free-living heterotrophic bacteria contributed significantly (> 30 %) to total microbial NH4 (+) and NO3 (-) uptake rates in low chlorophyll waters. Under these conditions, heterotrophic bacteria may be...

Nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase activities in S1 endogamic families of the maize populations Sol da Manhã NF and Catetão Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.
MACHADO,ALTAIR TOLEDO; SODEK,LADASLAV; PATERNIANI,ERNESTO; FERNANDES,MÂNLIO SILVESTRE.
The possibility of improving nitrogen use efficiency in maize was investigated using S1 endogamic families of the populations Sol da Manhã NF and Catetão. A simple 10 X 10 lattice design was adopted and the trials carried out at the experimental field of MITLA AGRÍCOLA LTDA, in Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais, during the 1994/95 planting season. Based on grain production figures, the three best and three worst performing S1 endogamic families were selected for this study. These were pooled to form four sub-populations denominated NFB, NFR (the best and worst families, respectively, of the Sol da Manhã NF variety), CATB and CATR (the best and worst families, respectively, of the Catetão variety). Each of these sub-populations was evaluated under...

Nutritional value of dual-purpose wheat genotypes pastures under grazing by dairy cows Animal Sciences
Quatrin, Mauricio Pase; Olivo, Clair Jorge; Bratz, Vinicius Felipe; Alessio, Vinicius; Santos, Fabiene Tomazetti dos; Aguirre, Priscila Flores.
In the south of Brazil, one of the major limitations to milk production is the low forage availability during autumn and early winter. The use of dual-purpose wheat genotypes is one alternative to minimize the impact of low forage availability in addition to produce grains. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the nutritional value of two dual-purpose wheat genotypes (BRS Tarumã and BRS Umbu). Structural composition and forage nitrogen uptake were evaluated. The nutritional value of the forage was analyzed for mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), crude protein (CP), total digestible nutrients (TDN), in situ organic matter digestibility (ISOMD) and in situ dry matter digestibility (ISDMD). Differences in NDF (49.03 vs....

Plankton community composition in relation to availability and uptake of oxidized and reduced nitrogen ArchiMer
Berg, Gm; Balode, M; Purina, I; Bekere, S; Bechemin, Christian; Maestrini, Serge.
Trends in nitrogen utilization, determined with N-15-labeled substrates, were related to blooms of distinct phytoplankton groups in the Gulf of Riga, Baltic Sea, during May, June and July 1999. The dominant phytoplankton groups included diatoms, cryptophytes, dinoflagellates, and filamentous cyanobacteria. As the water column became progressively more stratified over the growing season, diatoms comprised a smaller proportion of the total phytoplankton assemblage and almost disappeared by late summer. Their disappearance correlated with undetectable surface-water nitrate concentrations and low nitrate uptake rates (5 to 8% of total nitrogen uptake). Diatoms were the only phytoplankton group significantly associated with the uptake of oxidized nitrogen...

Residual effect of pig slurry on common carpet grass pasture AGRIAMBI
Albuquerque,Daiane C. K.; Scheffer-Basso,Simone M.; Escosteguy,Pedro A. V.; Brustolin-Golin,Karen D.; Zabot,Valdirene; Miranda,Mario.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the residual effects of pig slurry (PS) applied to common carpet grass pasture (Axonopus affinis) for two years (September 2008-March 2010) on dry matter yield and forage-nitrogen uptake from October 2010-May 2011. A field experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The treatments were 102, 204, 306, 408, and 510 m3 ha-1 pig slurry applied for two years; one mineral nitrogen rate (1,250 kg ha-1 ammonium nitrate) for two years; and no nitrogen fertilization (control). The pasture was cut at intervals of 48, 34, 43 and 69 days, which corresponded to 266, 300, 343, and 412 days after the last fertilizer application, respectively. Dry matter yield increased by 398 kg ha-1 for each 100...

The combination of compost or biochar with urea and NBPT can improve nitrogen-use efficiency in maize Anais da ABC (AABC)
COELHO,MICHELLE A.; FUSCONI,ROBERTA; PINHEIRO,LILIANE; RAMOS,IONARA C.; FERREIRA,ADÃO S..
ABSTRACT The addition of organic residues to agricultural soils has been used as a practical alternative to improve crop quality and health. The objective of this work was to evaluate maize physiological and nutritional responses to the application of compost and biochar combined with urea (N) and N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT). The experiment was performed in plastic pots with 3 kg of soil under greenhouse conditions for 30 days. The compost and biochar were applied at the rate of 0.3 ton ha-1, using an amount of nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) demanded by crop growth. The physiological responses of maize were monitored by measuring the plant height, stalk diameter, leaf chlorophyll content, shoot dry weight and root dry weight....
